About
'Shakespeare on Screen' celebrates the timeless power of William Shakespeare, the most frequently adapted author in cinema history. Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Bard's death, this program is a taste of the breadth and dynamism with which filmmakers have transmuted his plays from stage to screen. It brings together a mixture of traditional adaptations and creative reinventions, along with films that look at both the performance and the performers of the texts themselves. From The Tempest in outer space (Forbidden Planet 1956) to Othello in a London jazz club (All Night Long 1962), Shakespeare's work onscreen is restricted by neither genre nor setting — only the ingenuity of the adaptation.
Shakespeare on screen forum

Performarts pop-up: Much Ado About Nothing
12.00pm Tue 3 May 2016 / QAG, Gallery 11 / Free
Join us for a performed excerpt from the Queensland Theatre Company's upcoming production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, the timeless romantic comedy of two pairs of very different sweethearts, the people who want them to be together, and the people who try to rip them apart. Featuring Kathryn McIntyre as Margaret (Ladies in Black), Liz Buchanan as Dogberry (Grimm Tales) and Megan Shorey as Verges (One in Seven). Much Ado About Nothing opens at the QPAC Playhouse on 23 April, directed by Jason Klarwein (Oedipus Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The 7 Stages of Grieving).
QAGOMA thanks The National Film Centre, Tokyo; the National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra; Das Bundesarchiv, Berlin; and Filmoteca Española, Madrid for generously providing prints for this program. Program curated by Robert Hughes, Australian Cinémathèque.
