About
Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in Coriolanus, a modernisation of the Shakespearean drama. Set in a fictionalised version of present day Rome, Coriolanus follows Caius Martius (Fiennes) a powerful General who is hated by the Roman public for his arrogance. Despite his success in battle, he is expelled from the city and, fuelled by his feelings of betrayal, he attempts to join forces with his greatest enemy in order to take revenge on the Rome that has rejected him. Fiennes brings his thespian intensity to the role, working alongside Vanessa Redgrave and Jessica Chastain, to paint a portrait of a man driven by hatred. Shakespeare's words are kept in their original form but the modernisation of the action makes the film surprisingly, and powerfully, politically potent.
