As part of the inaugural World Science Festival Brisbane, the Australian Cinémathèque will present a number of screenings that examine the consequences of inviting computer technology into our lives, the science of the brain and the history of Islamic scientific discovery.

'Mind vs Machine' celebrates a rich subgenre of science fiction cinema that explores the intertwined relationship of humans and artificial intelligence. It focuses on films that investigate what it means to be human in counterpoint to humanoid technologies and the moral implications of artificial consciousness. The selection of films features androids contemplating their existence (Blade Runner 1982), the complexity of emotional engagement (Ex Machina 2015 and Her 2013), seamless virtual reality (eXistenZ 1999) and neo-hackers taking back bodies that have been made slave to machine (The Matrix 1999). A free discussion will delve into the themes explored in the films and the extent to which we're prepared to surrender to technology.

The Australian premiere of The Stanford Prison Experiment 2015 directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez focuses on the true story of the 1971 psychological experiment that sought to discover how power corrupts and whether we are all capable of malevolent behaviour in prison conditions.

A free screening of Science and Islam 2009, a three part BBC documentary series, offers a companion history to the well-known narrative of European scientific discoveries.

As we do not screen trailers prior to films we suggest you arrive early to allow plenty of time to enter and find a seat.

Presented by the Queensland Museum, the World Science Festival Brisbane takes place between 9 and 13 March 2016 and will bring some of the world's greatest thought leaders to Queensland, showcase local scientists and performers from around the Asia Pacific region, and host the brightest and the best from previous events in New York.
