About
eXistenZ follows video-game designer Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who is testing her latest immersive, virtual reality game. Wounded by an attempted assassination and her game damaged by a security breach, Allegra is forced to flee with marketing trainee Ted Pikul (Jude Law). To fix her game, Allegra convinces Ted to install a biotechnological 'bio-port' in his spine to assess the damage in her game pod.
While many filmmakers utilise computer generated imagery to shift into videogame fantasy—David Cronenberg uses grungy props and organic artefacts to fabricate a twisted cyber-universe that is realistic. In Cronenberg's first original script since Videodrome 1983, eXistenZ 1999 throws its characters into an unsettling, dizzying ride between material life and a cyber-space so manipulative that reality becomes distorted.
