About
Bruised by the breakdown of his marriage, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) seeks companionship in what he sees as the highly manageable realm of the cyber world—a place where perfection is possible and where needs can be met without compromise. He purchases Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), a computer operating system with enhanced artificial intelligence. Samantha represents the ideal woman to him: undemanding, comforting, voicing his innermost thoughts. Smitten by Samantha, Theodore signs his divorce papers, ready to commence a new chapter in his life. A relationship that is initially so alluring poses various complications Theodore has not foreseen, and director Spike Jonze explores the role that computer technology can play in shaping and distorting our personal, emotional and sexual relationships.
This screening is part of the 'Mind vs Machine: What Makes Us Human?' film program at GOMA.
