About
A young computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) unearths a fundamental truth about the world: reality is an illusion. An artificial intelligence called the Matrix has trapped humankind's consciousness inside a computer simulation. Awakened from the simulation, Neo joins a team of cyber-rebels who hope to crack the framework that holds the Matrix, and free humanity. Written and directed by the Wachowski siblings, The Matrix occupies a cyber-punk world that is inspired by Japanese animation for its aesthetic register, harnesses Hong Kong action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping for its action scenes, and draws on the writings of Plato and Descartes in its dialogue—for philosophical contemplation on the nature of reality.
This screening is part of the 'Mind vs Machine: What Makes Us Human?' film program at GOMA.
