About
In thirty days, a young dance teacher, Sophie (Miranda July) and her partner Jason (Hamish Linklater) are adopting a cat named ‘Paw Paw’ who has been given six months to live. When Sophie and Jason realise that Paw Paw may actually live up to five years, the couple are plunged into a state of crisis, and decide to quit their jobs and spend the next month attempting to fulfil their wildest dreams.
Beneath this seemingly light-hearted plotline, July delivers a profound commentary on the finite nature of life and our futile attempts to avoid suffering. Key moments in the film are taken directly from July’s earlier performance work titled Things We Don’t Understand and Definitely Are Not Going to Talk About 2006, which she developed after completing her first feature film, Me and You and Everyone We Know 2005. As is the case in most of July’s work, The Future debunks the myth of normalcy through absurd interactions that take place in everyday scenarios, including dancing inside a shirt and talking to the moon.
