About
Miranda July’s critically acclaimed breakout feature, Me and You and Everyone We Know is a delicately structured series of interwoven narratives that delve into the complicated nature of love and relationships.
Reprising a role similar to “The Amateurist” (a character July developed for an early video work of the same name), Miranda July plays a young performance artist (Christine), who forms a romantic attachment to Carl (John Hawkes); a shoe salesman desperately trying to repair his relationship to his two children following his failed marriage. Alongside this awkward love story, July explores the origins of our relationship to love and sex, as told through the experiences of Carl’s two sons.
Winner of four awards at the 2005 Cannes film festival including the Caméra d’or, Me and You and Everyone We Know is a modern masterpiece that bravely confronts the complexities of contemporary relationships. July carefully traverses the difficult territory of early sexual experience by coupling it with broader themes relating to longing and loneliness to arrive at an original and sophisticated take on love and togetherness.

The Amateurist 1998 (14 mins) Ages 15+
Miranda July’s video performance, The Amateurist examines the nature of surveillance by creating a scenario where the balance of power between the watcher and the watched is in a constant state of flux.
In the performance, Miranda July plays both the “Amateur”, a woman we see through a television monitor, and the “Amateurist”, a systems analyst who provides a running commentary on the Amateur. Through this interaction, July blurs the line between personal and professional relationships by heightening the significance of arbitrary daily systems and transforming them into a product of longing and desire.
