The Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a man of few words. A mysterious figure with no family or past, he works as a mechanic, stuntman and getaway driver, outsmarting everyone with his speed and cool demeanour. When he develops a fondness for his vulnerable next-door neighbour (Carey Mulligan) and her son, he finds himself drawn into a world of ruthless criminals and adrenaline-packed heists. Nicolas Winding Refn transforms James Sallis' 2012 crime novel into an arresting exercise in sound and vision. He was awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival and the film received a 15-minute standing ovation, emphasising the impact of this ultra-violent neo-noir. Gosling gives a deceptively simple performance as the titular driver; his mannerisms and facial expressions haunt long after the credits roll.
