During December 1978, Ruth Maddison and her partner Bob Daly spent three weeks at his parents’ house at Mermaid Beach, on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Maddison documented their holiday and the resulting series Christmas holiday with Bob’s family, Queensland (illustrated) formed her first solo exhibition.

From a Russian–Jewish background, Maddison grew up in an extended family, which she says explains her obsessive exploration of Australian popular culture. The artist was one of the foremost exponents of hand-coloured photographs in Australia in the 1970s and early ’80s. This series exemplifies a consciously intimate approach to documentary photography that emerged around this time.

Jasmine Togo-Brisby introduces her Triennial installation 'Copper Archipelago'

Brisbane-based artist Jasmine Togo-Brisby is an Australian South Sea Islander whose great-great-grandparents were taken from Vanuatu in 1899 to be domestic servants for the Wunderlich family, famous in the 19th and 20th Centuries for manufacturing pressed metal ceilings. Now on display at the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial, Togo-Brisby’s work ‘Copper Archipelago’ 2024 is a boat-shaped structure that looms over visitors reflecting the confinement of South Sea Islanders in the dark holds of large vessels en route to Australia. The underside of the work features an appropriated Wunderlich design modified to include images relating to her family and the practice of blackbirding; the coercion and kidnapping of people for slavery. Seventy artists, collectives and projects from more than 30 countries feature in the eleventh chapter of the flagship QAGOMA exhibition series, the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Bringing compelling new art to Brisbane, the Triennial is a gateway to the rapidly evolving artistic expression of Australia, Asia and the Pacific.
