How often does a five metre high, five and a half tonne bronze sculpture, arrive by barge on the Brisbane river with the aim to be lifted by crane on to the back of a truck, just to be slowly driven a few meters into position before being installed by a fearless team?

Well, on Wednesday 14 November 2012 this actually happened. QAGOMA’s major public sculpture The World Turns by international artist Michael Parekowhai was installed on the banks of the Brisbane River outside the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). The sculpture was commissioned in 2011 to mark the fifth anniversary of the opening of GOMA and twenty years of ‘The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ (APT).

The World Turns 2011-12 consists of three interrelated life-sized elements cast in bronze: a massive bookend in the form of an Indian elephant tipped on its head; easily overlooked, a kuril, the local native water rat; and a chair, which invites the viewer to sit and contemplate the work. The sculpture’s placement with the spectacular Brisbane skyline in the background adds to the overall appreciation.

Nestled beside GOMA and the State Library of Queensland and easily viewed from the river, you’d be excused for missing the animal encounter on foot, as its not a well-trodden thoroughfare, however its definitely worth the visit next time you are in the Cultural Precinct.

Parekowhai is known for the use of wry humour and his skilful combination of popular culture, art, literature and history. Along with the traditional Aboriginal custodians, the kuril is one of the caretakers of the land upon which the Gallery stands. Here, the kuril is planted firmly on the ground, going about its business grooming its fur, even though the world is upturned from its axis represented by the upturned elephant bookend its positioning referencing the nearby library.

The sculpture reminds us that history is often recorded to highlight specific moments, but, as the world turns, there are many other stories, and these are central to our understanding of history.

    The World Turns: A warm, witty outdoor sculpture

The warm and witty bronze sculpture comprises a five-metre elephant bookend turned on its side, attended by a nonchalant kuril, the native marsupial water rat so significant to the dreaming of local Aboriginal people, and, at the periphery of the stretch of lawn that the sculpture occupies between GOMA, the State Library of Queensland, and the mangroves lining the Brisbane River, a solitary chair. In Western culture, the traditional ordering of the arts and senses proposes painting as the art for sight, music as the art for hearing, cuisine for taste and perfumery for smell. Sculpture, it is said, is the art of touch, though most often this touch is experienced at a distance, such that the skill of the sculptor lies in marshalling the other senses to emulate the experience of contact. Registers of tactility and physical presence, such as texture, solidity, mass, inertia and torsion, are often evoked through the careful construction of oppositions. Levity plays against gravity, volume against emptiness, light against darkness, the location and constituent forces of other bodies against those of our own. In visual analysis, these oppositions are often described as contrasts or tensions, and they become a certain measure of the success of a given work of sculpture. Beyond its participation in dialogues surrounding the profound historical and cultural significance of the site on which the Cultural Precinct now sits, the work can certainly be admired. But it could also be argued that slightly more technical sculptural terms add another layer of judgment and interpretation. For the visual tension in The World Turns is indeed impressive, its play of mass and line, of spatial enclosure, and the way the eye is guided so smoothly over the sculpture’s contours amidst a catalogue of contrasts — of scale and disposition, of positive and negative space, of the work’s constituent bronze against its verdant ground. The elephant’s forehead appears to be pressing obstinately into the earth, not only because of the direction of its gait, but also because of the weight that the structure implies. The significance of this technical assessment is not merely formal; it provides a way of reading the relationship between the work’s protagonists. The elephant, a symbol of Afro–Asian exoticism in the European imagination, continues its useless labour, while the Indigenous kuril grooms itself nearby. It is possible to see their contrasting attitudes as repeating the rhythm of oppositions constructed by traditional sculptural criticism. But a third figure haunts the scene: the empty chair at the edge of the green. This marks the place of the viewer, the third party who complicates binary views of the world, whose acts of sensing and thinking ensure that the relationship has a witness, and that in bearing witness it becomes public. The world may turn, but so do the dynamics of our interactions, our ways of being in the world. In public space, the meanings we draw from experience and our judgments of the actions of others will shift and change with time and discussion. The World Turns has already provoked much conversation. May it continue to do so.     Go on a sculpture walk at QAG or GOMA

    Ever wondered how many sculptures are surrounding the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art? We have compiled our precinct Sculpture Walk highlighting the 10 fascinating artworks by leading Australian and international artists. The walk is a delightful way to explore the works at your leisure at any time. Background Even before the Queensland Art Gallery opened in its new permanent and purpose built home at South Bank in June 1982, the provision of artworks for public areas around the precinct was recognised as an integral part of the Queensland Cultural Centre. It was to be the first time that a major grouping of Australian sculptures were simultaneously commissioned to have a harmonious relationship with their surrounding environment. From an original selection of nine possible locations, a final five locations were approved. In August 1983, artists throughout Australia were invited to register their interest with 69 responding, of those, 26 were asked to provide a more detailed proposal for their chosen locations and finally in April 1984 five artists were announced and the series was installed by May 1985. Since the Gallery of Modern Art opened in 2006, public art has gradually been commissioned to surround the site, continuing the vision begun for the Queensland Art Gallery. Queensland Art Gallery Offshoot: A painted aluminium abstract by Clement Meadmore positioned at the entrance to the Queensland Art Gallery plaza. Pelicans: Five cast bronzes by artists Leonard Shillam and Kathleen Shillam for the Queensland Art Gallery Water Mall, Melbourne Street forecourt. Anthony Pryor Approaching Equilibrium 1985 Anthony Pryor described Approaching Equilibrium 1985 as exhibiting ‘the condition of equal balance between opposing forces… an equality of importance or effect among the various parts of a complex unity.
