All this time recently stuck indoors has had me thinking about artists along the lines of the ‘ultimate dinner party’ game where you dream up a list of people from throughout history that you would invite to a magnificent meal. Which artists, I have been wondering, would be most fun to bunker down with to survive the pandemic?

For my ultimate dinner party I am always trying to rack my brain for people with eccentric anecdotes, a wide breadth of knowledge and witty banter. But lock-down is more drawn out than a dinner party, so I think this crew needs a little more absurd humour and do-it-yourself attitude! For my ultimate iso housemates I have chosen Cindy Sherman, Yvonne Todd, Anne Noble, Takahiko Iimura, Tony Schwensen, and the late, great John Baldessari.

Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman is renowned for her witty and biting character studies. She appears twice in Untitled, as a pair of champagne-fuelled fashionistas desperately seeking the social photographer’s attention. Over four decades of practice, Sherman has deployed an impressive array of wigs, costumes, makeup, and prosthetics. The days and weeks of isolation would pass in a flash if I had the chance to dive into Cindy’s treasure trove of props.

The title of Yvonne Todd’s series ‘Cabin fever’ sums up what many of us are feeling as the coronavirus restrictions begin to ease. The artist has a keen eye for the absurd, especially when it comes to beauty and fashion. Lockdown days with Todd could be spent competing to find the most bizarre pictures in the deep depths of Instagram.

Working with her daughter, Anne Noble created the ‘Ruby’s Room’ series over a period of six years. These closely cropped images of young Ruby’s little mouth are simple yet unnerving, and take on heightened meaning during COVID-19. During this pandemic many things in the world that were once familiar have become strange and I think Noble could infuse the current weirdness with intimacy and humour.

In Performance: AIUEONN Six the experimental filmmaker and performance artist Takahiko Iimura enunciates and holds the vowel sounds from the Japanese and English languages. As he makes the sounds, his portrait becomes distorted with grotesque and exaggerated results. After the first sequence, Iimura plays with repetition and delay until the sound and image no longer match up — making everything even stranger. Making videos at home with Iimura during quarantine would definitely give you TikTok clout.

In the video Hamburger boygroup, Tony Schwensen dances to the 1999 song Keep on movin’ by the British boy band Five, which reached number six on the ARIA charts. Reducing their highly choreographed dance moves down to a single repeated step, tubby Schwensen distills overproduced pop culture into an endurance performance piece. Iso dance parties in the lounge room with Schwensen are sure to go until dawn — but the poor neighbours might get annoyed with the same song on repeat!

In 1970, John Baldessari burned all the artworks he had made during the late 1950s and early 1960s to create a new work titled Cremation Project 1970 — that’s a lot of great paintings up in flames! The comparatively new technology of video enabled Baldessari to reinvent definitions of art through actions, text and sound.

In the seminal work I am making Art Baldessari uses humour to parody the hermetic aspects of contemporary art. With galleries, studios and art supply stores harder to access due COVID-19 restrictions, I think Baldessari would remind us that we all already have what we need in order to make art.

    The informality & intimacy of E Phillips Fox’s female figures

    After establishing himself as a successful painter in Australia, E (Emanuel) Phillips Fox (12 March 1865–1915) moved to England at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1905, he married English artist Ethel Carrick (1872–1952) and the couple settled in Paris during the Parisian Belle Epoque, living at 65 Boulevard Arago in Montparnasse. Paris' artistic circles migrated to Montparnasse as the alternative to the Montmartre district which had been favoured by the previous generation of artists. The couple remained in Paris until 1913 before settling in Australia. Throughout his years in Paris, Fox made a series of painting trips throughout Europe, northern Africa and Australia, and exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris (National Society of Fine Arts), being elected an Associate then a full member in 1910, the first Australian artist to attain that honour, and in 1912 was elected to the International Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, London. Bathing hour (L’heure du bain) c.1909 Bathing hour (L’heure du bain) c.1909 is thought to depict a beach on France’s Channel Coast that, in the early twentieth century, was frequented by the upper middle class. Bathing was not yet common and, while it was unusual for a female child to appear naked in polite society, it was equally unusual for her to be tended to by her mother rather than a nanny. By contrasting the girl’s nakedness and the mother’s flowing robes with the more restrictive costumes of the women in the background, Fox may be commenting on the relaxation of social customs that was occurring in Europe at the time. Resting c.1910–11 Fox began painting nudes in 1909, with some set in the garden of his and Carrick’s Parisan apartment, and others set indoors. Resting c.1910-11 is one of the finest of Fox’s nudes in an interior setting, and also one of his least conventional, with its shadowed half-light and the figure’s languid pose. The end of the story c.1911-12 The end of the story c.1911-12 depicts a woman in contemplation, reclining upon a chaise lounge, with her fingers marking a page in a closed book. As in the case of many Fox’s paintings of women, she is depicted within an interior setting — confined within the domestic realm — as an idealised version of femininity. Fox was not alone among his contemporaries in depicting women in this way, in fact, many of the paintings being exhibited in Paris during this period featured similar subjects and treatment.

    Church interiors

    Three works by three Australian artists born within three years of each other, all with different life experiences, immerse us in the solemn atmosphere of the church interior where light gleams through stained glass onto the altars below. Ian Fairweather Born in Scotland and schooled in Britain and Switzerland, Ian Fairweather (29 September 1891–1974) was raised in a military family with the expectation that he, too, would serve in the British Army. With the declaration of World War One (1914–18), the 23 year old served as a second lieutenant and was sent to the Western Front with his battalion. Captured in the early days of his combat, he remained a prisoner of war in Germany for nearly four years. During his captivity, Fairweather’s artistic career began, as he sketched and painted and had access to the POW camp library. In his lifetime, Fairweather was one of Australia’s greatest artists who painted some of his most celebrated works in Queensland, on Bribie Island. Created between 1916 and 1918, this early interior study demonstrates Fairweather’s astute use of line and colour to recreate a moment in time, while also showing his development as an artist. In (Church interior with female figure) c.1916–18 (illustrated), there is a lightness of touch to the simplicity with which Fairweather captures the scene. Church interior with female figure c.1916-18 Grace Cossington Smith Grace Cossington Smith (20 April 1892–1984) played a leading role in the development of early twentieth-century art in Australia, her striking paintings symbols of modernity. Church interior c.1941–42 (illustrated) depicts the then-new St James Anglican Church in Turramurra, Sydney (built in 1941), where the artist and her family worshiped, it is one of a small but important group of works the artist made on religious themes. The painting also encapsulates the artist’s concern with colour. Cossington Smith wrote: All form — landscape, interiors, still life, flowers, animals, people — has an inarticulate grace and beauty; painting to me is expressing this form in colour, colour vibrant with light — but containing this other, silent quality which is unconscious, and belongs to all things created. Church interior alludes to the impact of World War Two on the home front by the absence of men of enlistment age in the congregation. Church interior c.1941-42 William Bustard William Bustard (18 April 1894–1973) was a prolific and talented designer of stained glass windows. This was a skill which he perfected in Europe before emigrating to Australia in 1921. Bustard designed and executed hundreds of stained glass windows in cathedrals, churches and schools in Queensland. Among these were twenty windows for St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane (Sketch for St. Etheldreda illustrated). The artist’s painting of the interior of the cathedral depicts several of the windows which he had designed and made himself. Bustard apparently took great pleasure in designing windows for the Australian climate with its high key light which was so unlike that which he had been used to in England. In many of his paintings also, Bustard demonstrated his fascination with light. St. John’s Cathedral, Brisbane 1941 (illustrated) is one example of this, and is also one among several paintings he made during this period of similar subjects.
