Air Up Late at GOMA in March 2023
Up Late returns to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in March with an unforgettable two-night celebration featuring outdoor sets by leading Australian musicians and DJs, an art-making workshop, dining, bars and more.
Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said Air Up Late would be presented at GOMA from 6.00pm to 10.30pm on both Friday 17 and Saturday 18 March.
‘We are thrilled to offer this program during our summer blockbuster exhibition – ‘Air’, which includes major works by more than thirty leading international and Australian artists,’ Mr Saines said.
Audiences have an opportunity to enjoy artworks across a range of media from large immersive installations to intimately scaled objects presented across the entire ground floor of GOMA.
‘Particularly captivating at night is the major new commission by Argentinian-born, Berlin-based artist Tomás Saraceno, 15 large-scale partially mirrored spheres suspended through GOMA’s Long Gallery.
‘Air Up Late is an opportunity to explore the exhibition’s five unfolding chapters – Atmosphere, Shared, Burn, Invisible and Change – complemented by an invigorating line-up of live music outside on the Maiwar Green,’ Mr Saines said.
On Friday 17 March, Up Late will feature the evocative indie sounds of Naarm-based songwriter Alice Skye (Wergaia/Wemba Wemba people), as well as a dreamy alt-pop performance by Brisbane‑based Clea.
Saturday 18 March sees an intimate live show by Melbourne‑based Camp Cope, along with a guitar-driven power-pop set from Melaleuca and the raw alt-rock of Special Features (QUBE Effect performance partner prize winners 2022), both from Brisbane.
Inside GOMA, Air Up Late visitors can get creative with Suspended Particles, a drop-in workshop inspired by Jemima Wyman’s artwork in ‘Air’, Plume 20 2022. All ages and skill levels can make their own suspended particles by collaging cloud-like shapes to create a camouflage plume.
Capacity on both nights of Air Up Late is limited, with live music under the Maiwar Green marquee for fresh air and space to move. All payments are contactless for visitor safety.

On Sunday 19 March visitors can enjoy the Gallery’s Autumn Design Market on the Maiwar Green, GOMA, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. The Market offers a diverse range of product by some of Queensland’s most innovative craft and design artists, against a backdrop of music by local DJs.
'Air' is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, and Major Partners Shayher Group and Urban Art Projects.
