About
'Contemporary Miniatures' is a collection-based exhibition drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery's fine holdings of miniature paintings from South Asia. The selection of works dating from the past decade explore the dynamic visual language of miniature painting and its continued significance in contemporary art practice. The formal elements of miniature painting - from the rigorous discipline and meticulous application required to its central narrative function - connect many of the artists in the exhibition. However, each artist employs a unique and innovative interpretation of the tradition.
Through the skillful rendering of abstraction and figuration, contemporary miniature artists today sample from historical events as well as vernacular culture to create evocative narratives that respond to the complexities of contemporary life. 'Contemporary Miniatures' includes works from the following artists: Khadim Ali, N.S. Harsha, Ali Kazim, Aisha Khalid, Surendran Nair & Jon Cattapan, Mohammad Imran Qureshi, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Bassam Rifai, Sangeeta Sandrasegar, Hossein & Angela Valamanesh, Mahreen Asif Zuberi and Saira Wasim.
