About
Australia has a rich history of contemporary studio glass practitioners. The development of Australian glass is largely a narrative of friendships, mentorships, and collaboration between individuals rather than organisations. The magical appeal of glass – and the unique qualities in the play of transmitted, reflected and refracted light – has driven a spirit of inquiry and experimentation by Australian glass artists.
Ceramic dishes, bowls and bottles have been in continual use for centuries, with function generally dictating form in the design of practical vessels intended for daily use. Shapes for particular applications have evolved over time, and studio potters in Australia continue to explore a wide variety of styles and decorative elements.
Using their skills and knowledge, Australian glass and ceramic artists create distinctive personal languages filtered through their own experiences.
