Teens takeover GOMA for a vibrant day of art, music and creativity!

Experience live performances and talks by fellow teens. Get hands on with activities, drawing and explore awe-inspiring art.

The Teens Festival is designed to be an inclusive, welcoming, safe space for teens aged 13 – 17 years to drop in and be yourself at the Gallery.

This project has been assisted by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Australia

Talk: Growing Your Music Fanbase

Are you inspired by a love of live music? Do you dream of performing on stage and touring the world?

Gain tips on how to build an audience of fans for your music from Ixaras, 17-year-old Indie Pop Rock queer artist and founder of Anti-Dismal in this conversation hosted by Patience Hodgson, who formed the iconic Brisbane band, The Grates when she was 19.

Lucky Dip Drawing: Fashion Design

10.00am – 2.00pm, Bistro Lawn | Free

Drop in and kickstart your drawing with a spark of inspiration chosen from a lucky dip.

Receive a mystery drawing instruction crafted by fashion designer, Kiara Bulley (Bulley Bulley Label), who will guide you to create a garment design based on the fascinating worlds of science, biology, technology and nature.

Teens Take Over the Bodhi Tree Stage

10.00am – 2.00pm, Bodhi Tree Terrace | Free

Do you love to hear and see live music? Join us for a gig performed by teens for teens under the Bodhi Tree, outside GOMA. The most enthusiastic and passionate Teens who entered the ‘Teens Takeover GOMA’ competition have been selected to light up the stage throughout the day.

‘I have a background in dance, so I really think about movement when I create, it's about a transformation of the body’ - Iris van Herpen

Dancer Elijah-Jade Bowen (Mununjali & Guugu Yimithirr) performs in the heart of the ‘Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses’ exhibition. The dance performance will respond to the ambient exhibition soundscape, composed by artist Salvador Breed.

No bookings required. A valid exhibition ticket is required to attend this event.

Hands-On Activity: Art Box

10.00am – 5.00pm, Gallery 1.4 | Free

‘Art Box for Kids’ is an exciting new exhibition series that invites children to meet an artist through an introductory video, see an example of the artist’s work on display, and explore their creativity through a fun hands-on activity.

Our first ‘Art Box for Kids’ features Ngugi artist Elisa Jane Carmichael who paints, weaves, and uses textiles to explore the beauty of nature and to reflect her family’s connection to the land. In her activity Shell adornments, Elisa invites children to create their own unique paper shell necklace, inspired by the beautiful eugarie shells (pipis) that can be found on the shores of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).

‘Art Box for Kids’ prioritises sustainable exhibition design and the use of recycled or repurposed activity materials where possible.

Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses

Fashion, art, design, science and technology collide in the world of endlessly innovative and internationally acclaimed Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen.

Exclusive to Brisbane, this exhibition is an immersive sensory exploration of her practice with close to 100 garments in conversation with contemporary artworks, natural history specimens and cultural artefacts from which the designer draws inspiration.

Creative Generation 2024 Excellence Awards in Visual Art

Each year, the ‘Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art’ recognises and celebrates the artistic achievements and creative talents of senior high school students from across Queensland.

Across a diverse range of media, materials and techniques these young artists use art to give voice to the thoughts, feelings and concerns of their generation.

The ‘Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art’ is an initiative of the Queensland Department of Education, supported by QAGOMA.
