Alongside the exhibition 'Fairy Tales', episodes of Jim Henson’s The StoryTeller 1987 screen throughout the day in Cinema B.

The nine stories in this anthology series are drawn from European fairy tales, many first published by the Brothers Grimm. Bringing together a human cast and enchanting puppets developed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, these tales are rich with wonder, mystery and delight.

Fantasy Sunday Sesh

Play or learn fantasy tabletop games hosted by Vault Games, take in the river view while enjoying food and drinks from GOMA Bistro and enjoy giant lawn games for all ages.

Vault Games is a Brisbane owned gaming store specialising in tabletop, role-playing, miniatures, trading cards and community events.

The Gallery welcomes visitors of all ages. Parental guidance is suggested for a small number of artworks in ‘Fairy Tales’. More information available below:

Participation

  • Events during the Fairy Tales Festival are designed for all ages.
  • All materials are supplied. You don’t need to bring anything.

Plan your visit

  • Parking for the Cultural Precinct is available in neighbouring carparks under the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and State Library of Queensland (SLQ), which both have limited parking capacity. Find out more about getting to the Gallery and parking.
  • Cloak rooms are at the entries to both QAG and GOMA.
    • Please check bags bigger than 40cm x 15cm x 35cm, umbrellas and items our staff feel may not be safe for other visitors or works of art inside the Gallery.
    • You can keep bags containing care needs for yourself or anyone in your care, including bags containing items for a medical condition or first aid supplies, baby carriers being used to carry a child, or baby bags securely and unobtrusively attached to a pram or carried by the carer’s side.
  • We ask all attendees to be kind, respectful, and courteous to all participants, speakers and staff at this event. This program will be monitored by QAGOMA staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, speakers and staff.

Visiting with children & infants

  • Please supervise any children under the age of 12 for whom you are responsible.
  • Prams are welcome, and all areas of QAG and GOMA are accessible by lift or ramp.
  • Designated pram parking will be available in the Children's Art Centre.
  • There are two parents’ rooms at QAG, one near the Stanley Place entrance and one near the Pelican Lounge, both on the Watermall level. Please ask our staff for directions.
  • There is a parents’ room at GOMA, in the Cinema Foyer. Please ask our staff for directions.
  • Breastfeeding and infant bottle-feeding are welcome anywhere in the Gallery, or you can use the parents’ rooms at either QAG or GOMA.
  • The parents’ rooms can be used to mix infant formula.
  • Food and drink for older children and adults are not allowed in the Gallery, and we ask you to please keep water bottles in a bag.

Bookings, tickets & payments

  • Some events are free and unbooked, while others require a valid timed-entry ‘Fairy Tales’ exhibition ticket or booking. Please read the booking information on specific programs.
  • QAGOMA is cashless. Card payments only.

Sensory aspects

  • The Fairy Tales Festival takes place in indoor and outdoor areas. Please ensure you are sun safe.
  • A Low Sensory viewing of ‘Fairy Tales’ will be held between 8.30 – 10.00am on Sat 20 Jan.
    • Suitable for Autistic visitors and visitors with sensory sensitivity or disability.
  • A Calm Room will be open from 8.30am – 5.00pm daily during the Festival, featuring a quiet zone with comfortable places to sit, low light levels and calming activities.
    • Please note by entering the Calm Room, you are agreeing to minimise noise and will place your personal devices on silent or use with headphones.
  • A range of different types of seating will be available during the Fairy Tales Festival, including floor seating, plus chairs with and without backs.
  • The Pop-Up Performances, Storytelling and Fantasy Sunday Sesh will feature amplified sound and background music may be played.
  • The lighting in the exhibition space is dimly lit in areas. Other areas of this event will be brightly lit (you may choose to wear sunglasses).
  • The Gallery air conditioning is set to 21°C to conserve the artworks.
  • This event will be photographed/filmed by QAGOMA staff. If you do not wish to be photographed/filmed, please advise a QAGOMA staff member on arrival.
