SOFT DISSENT: HELEN JOHNSON'S WOMEN'S WORK How are Australian women artists reusing and opposing historical imagery created of, and by, women? In this lecture, Professor Susan Best, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, examines Australian Collection artist Helen Johnson's recently commissioned artworks Women's work (1902 and 1912) 2017. The works are a direct response to well-known historical paintings by women artists in the Queensland Art Gallery collection – A.M.E Bale's Leisure moments 1902 and Vida Lahey's Monday morning 1912. This lecture proposes that the cool, ambivalent tone of Johnson's paintings challenges traditional depictions of female labour and leisure, and subsequently shifts our understanding of a feminist lineage. Accompanied by a tailored list of suggested readings and resources. Susan Best is Professor of Art History, Deputy Director Research and Postgraduate, and Director of Griffith Centre for Creative Arts, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Her research focuses on critical theory and post 1960s international art with a particular focus on women's art, conceptual art and Latin American Art.
