About
Inspired by angel sculptures visible around West Berlin, and at the time, encircled by the Berlin Wall, Wings of Desire invites the viewer to reflect on their life's purpose and journey on Earth. Damiel (Bruno Ganz), an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin, hears the thoughts of the people living in the streets down below, comforting those who require it. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin), he is willing to give up his immortality to be with her and to experience the everyday. With colour sequences representing the world as seen by the human, and sepia-toned black-and-white sequences representing the world as seen by the angel, Wim Wenders contemplates the meaning and desire to simply be human and to experience the wonders of the every day. A film that is as once profoundly grounded and incredibly mystical.
