About
Decades after the genre had reached the zenith of its popularity, Peter Bogdanovich shot the screwball comedy back into the mainstream with his blockbuster hit What’s Up, Doc?
Starring Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal, the film is a loving homage to the Golden Age of screwball. The plot centres on the inadvertent exchange of multiple identical bags at a San Francisco hotel. The piling up of errors leads to high-stakes drama and a burgeoning connection between O’Neal’s strait-laced musicologist and Streisand’s chaotic college dropout.
Bogdanovich imbues his screwball romance with an anarchic spirit that draws inspiration from the visual inventiveness of silent cinema and mid-century Looney Tunes, leading to one of the wildest and funniest comedies of the 1970s.
What’s Up, Doc? will screen from an archival 35mm print.
