About
Max Renn (James Woods) is the president of a Canadian UHF TV channel that specialises in salacious content. After one of his colleagues shows him a mysterious broadcast featuring depictions of graphic torture and sexual violence, he decides to license the show for his channel. Max becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering its secrets after his new girlfriend – the sadomasochistic radio host Nicki Brand (Deborah Harry) – goes to audition for the show and never returns.
David Cronenberg’s dystopian nightmare presents terrors on the airwaves: a world in which sinister television transmissions are rotting minds, both figuratively and literally. The film is a prescient commentary on the intersection of technology, pornography and humanity – a vision that Cronenberg realises through stunning body horror ingenuity and sci-fi laced social critique.
Please note: this film contains scenes of sexual violence.
