About
Juliette Binoche stars as French dancer Béatrice who undertakes an apartment swap with an American psychologist (William Hurt). She swaps her ramshackle Parisian apartment for a slick, New York residence complete with concierge. Misunderstandings and emotional entanglements ensue. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s a strong romantic streak developed in French cinema. Binoche was a key part of crafting the French romantic ideal and portrayals of sensuality on screen. Binoche had long hoped to work with the film’s director Chantal Akerman and this light romantic comedy is a departure from Akerman’s usual ground-breaking feminist cinema.
“What a strange story this film. I wrote it because the actress Juliette Binoche asked me to prepare a comedy for her. As it happens, I started writing the script when my father was very ill and on the verge of death. As if I could only get out of that pain by writing something funny and light. Most Jewish jokes are born out of unbearable pain.” Belgian film director, screenwriter and artist Chantal Akerman.
