About
One of the pioneering voices in internet art, Taiwanese-American artist Shu Lea Cheang explores the indexical link between experiences of identity and technology.
For more than three decades, Cheang has produced video, installation and internet-based artworks that address the complex politics associated with the corporatisation of media, sexual identity and internet culture. In the artist’s most recent feature film UKI, a large pharmaceutical corporation known as GENOM Co., commodifies biodata to create mass-market products that exploit experiences of pleasure; a scheme that is ultimately foiled by the advent of a highly contagious virus.
In this cyberpunk-infused vision of an alternate reality, Cheang draws upon recent events, such as the HIV and COVID-19 pandemics, to bring long-standing concerns relating to societal control and identity into current lexicon by using contemporary computer-generated and live-action production techniques.
Ages 18+ | Strong themes, sexualised imagery and occasional coarse language
