Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu is one of the shining jewels of Japanese cinema. A fable about the destructive powers of greed and envy, it is an evocative and masterfully rendered cinematic journey that weaves haunting supernatural elements into its tragic narrative. The film follows two 16th century peasants, Genjuro and Tobei, who decide to sell their pottery to soldiers in a nearby village during a period of national conflict. Warned against profiting from civil upheaval by a local sage, they ignore this advice and continue to pursue fame and fortune at the expense of their relationships — and their souls. Winner of the Silver Lion at the 1953 Venice Film Festival, Ugetsu would greatly influence Martin Scorsese, who has described the film as one of his personal favourites and stated that "there are moments in the picture, famous ones, that I’ve seen again and again and that always take my breath away".
