About
Issa López's Tigers are Not Afraid is a dark fantastical exploration of the Mexican drug war, influenced by the early works of Guillermo del Toro. The film follows Estrella, a young girl whose school day is interrupted by a gang shooting outside the classroom. Returning home, she discovers that her mother is missing and so takes refuge with a group of local orphans living on the streets. Estrella and her new companions soon find themselves caught up in a criminal conspiracy involving a local politician, while victims of the ongoing violence resulting from the drug trade begin appearing to them as ghosts hungry for revenge. López's film is a magical realist journey that dives into its subject matter with a gripping intensity.
