About
John O’Grady’s best-selling satirical novel brought Michael Powell Down Under to direct this film, with Pressburger penning the screenplay. Arriving in Sydney to take up a job, sports journalist Nino Culotta (Walter Chiari) immediately finds himself in debt to the beautiful Kay Kelly (Clare Dunne) because of his cousin, and is forced to work as a builder's laborer to pay off his dues. The hapless, but optimistic, Italian soon overcomes cultural differences, and enthusiastically embraces a growing attraction between him and his unlikely creditor. Capitalising on the humour in Nino’s bewildering encounters with Aussies and his struggle with local slang, They’re a Weird Mob offers an authentic 1960s impression of the immigrant experience in the Antipodes, and is fondly regarded as one of the best and funniest films about “the Australian way”.
They're a Weird Mob will screen from an archival 35mm print.
