About
A seminal early haunted house film, Lewis Allen's warm and elegant The Haunting finds siblings Roderick (Ray Milland) and Pamela (Ruth Hussey) purchasing a seaside house in Cornwall at a price that seems too good to be true. As Roderick begins a romance with the proprietor's granddaughter Stella (Gail Russell), he and his sister uncover the dark history of the house. Allen's film features many of the tropes that would come to define the genre (including séances, mysterious rooms, and the cold chills of unseen spectres) while still asserting itself as an absorbing tale in its own right.
