About
Based on the beloved ‘Uncle Choi’ comic book series, Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-tung’s The Raid is a visually dazzling action-comedy extravaganza.
Set during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in the 1930s, the film follows the venerable Uncle Choi as he seeks to help a band of rebel soldiers destroy a factory producing chemical weapons. After being rebuffed due to his age, he sets out with a motley crew of shady crooks and fiery youngsters on an adventure filled with danger, daring and espionage.
Playing the villainous Kam Pik-Fai (aka real-life Japanese spy Yoshiko Kawashima), Joyce Godenzi lights up the screen with both a musical number and a ferocious fistfight in what would be one of her final screen roles. The film overflows with the aesthetic extravagance for which Hark is renowned, drawing clear inspiration from the manhua on which it is based.
