About
Set in Victorian-era London, rival magicians Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) and Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) attempt to outclass each other through staging illustrious magic tricks and illusions. However, a notable trick, named ‘The Transported Man’, as individually performed by both magicians, stirs the bitter competition to an obsessive, life-threatening reveal. Obsession, sacrifice and showmanship revel in this race to uncover the hidden secret behind each other’s performance of the magic trick.
David Bowie stars as real-life inventor, engineer and genius, Nikola Tesla. In a small but pivotal role, Tesla is involved in his own rivalry against inventor Thomas Edison, whose bitter and oppressive business practices have forced him into the shadows. Magician Angier pays for Tesla to help create a machine to transport an object from one place to another seamlessly. Christopher Nolan cast Bowie, believing him to be as mysterious as the version of Tesla he had envisioned. Bowie’s restrained, yet provocative performance serves as an emotional catalyst for the rivalry at play.
