The feature debut from writer-director David Easteal, The Plains is a mesmerising meditation on the tidal rhythms of life. The film takes place almost exclusively within a car driven by the middle-aged Andrew, whose peak hour commute to the outer suburbs of Melbourne presents a forum for reflections on memory, family and the vagaries of relationships. The quotidian nature of these conversations meld major and minor events into one absorbing flow, captured with minimalistic acuity. After its recent acclaimed premiere at the 2022 International Film Festival Rotterdam, these will be the first Australian screenings of this compelling new work.
