Mummified for 3700 years, Imhotep (Boris Karloff) is accidentally brought back to life by British archaeologists, Sir Joseph Whemple and his son Frank. The mummy's sole purpose upon awakening is to be reunited with his lost love, princess Anck-es-en-Amon. Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann), the reincarnation of Anck-es-en-Amon, is unaware of her former life but is soon found by the mummy. It is up to the archaeologists to protect Helen but they must contend with Imhotep's mesmeric power over her.

The film was released ten years after archaeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamen's tomb. The mummified Tutankhamen was put on display at the Cairo Museum and quickly became its most popular exhibit. The Mummy capitalised on this new-found fascination with Egypt. It was renowned cinematographer Karl Freund's first foray into directing.
