Harrison Ford stars Allie Fox, an idealistic inventor who has grown sick of the blind consumerism he sees as controlling his life in America. He whisks his wife (Helen Mirren) and family away to a small rainforest village in Belize to start an independent and subsistent life outside of ‘civilisation’. But Allie’s obsessive desire to begin a new existence grows increasingly dangerous as his family begins to question his sanity.

Australian director Peter Weir brings the acclaimed novel by Paul Theroux to life in a film that draws equally from ‘Robinson Crusoe’ and the sweaty madness of Werner Herzog. Paul Schrader’s script amplifies the novel’s interrogations of domineering masculinity and societal mistrust, while Ford gives one of his most ambitious and underappreciated performances in a role that twists his innate charisma around the darkness that lies at the heart of his ever-more-frenzied character.
