About
The Man Who Envied Women centres on academic Jack Deller as he waxes poetic about psychoanalytic theory and muses about the ethics of his infidelity. Extended monologic scenes make for an illuminating portrait of a man whose punishing treatment of women is set in contrast to the ways in which he professes to love and admire them. At the same time, director Yvonne Rainer surveys topical crises – such as political oppression in Guatemala – and engages with contemporary discourse around masculinity and the cultural value of art. By blending the forms of film and visual essay, Rainer presents a scorching critique of intellectualised misogyny delivered in full force.
Please note: this film contains archival footage and photographs of war violence.
