About
A failed experiment causes Dr Jack Griffin (Claude Rains) to become invisible. Desperate to find an antidote, and to conceal the horrors of his appearance from his daughter and colleagues, Griffin seeks self-isolation in a rural English village. Unbeknownst to him, the experiment has also distorted his mind and his attempts to hide from the prying community turn violent. Renowned Universal director James Whale visualises HG Wells’ novel of the same name, emphasising the story’s stark winter atmospherics and physically-driven comedic performances, aided by the brilliance of John P Fulton’s remarkable special effects which formed the iconic look of the invisible man. The film surpasses the conventional monster tale by delving into themes concerning the existence of the outsider, their treatment by society, and how encounters beyond one’s belief challenge both personal and social structures
