About
Tony Scott's gothic vampire tale set in 1980s New York is a stylish directorial debut, where mythos and thematic reflections on life and death take place. Miriam (Catherine Deneuve) promises her lovers the gift of eternal life, but her vampiric companion, John (David Bowie), discovers that he is getting old minute by minute, and so looks to Dr. Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon) — a researcher on the mechanisms of ageing — for answers.
Tony Scott's craft oozes onto the screen, bringing together stylistic choices that echo French surrealism and tropes from the classic horror-thriller. The Hunger has grown a cult-like status within the gothic subculture, where the love triangle at hand (accentuated by the film’s own stars) explores humanity’s obsession with undying love and beauty.
