About
Each year on the first Monday in May, The Metropolitan Museum of Art opens its doors to one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world, affectionately referred to as “The Met Gala”. Following on from the hugely successful Alexander McQueen exhibition, “Savage Beauty” in 2011, The First Monday in May 2016 directed by Andrew Rossi, follows Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton as he prepares for the exhibition opening of "China: Through The Looking Glass", a major design survey exploring the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion.
The film takes us through the winding corridors of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume department, revealing a jewel-studded collection of priceless garments from some of the World’s leading haute couture designers. Anna Wintour, Baz Luhrmann and Wong Kar Wai also feature in the film as creative collaborators for the exhibition, as does Chinese designer Guo Pei’s iconic yellow cape gown, as modelled by performer Rihanna.
