About
A poetic and sweeping period drama from Anthony Minghella, The English Patient is the spectacular adaptation of Michael Ondaatje’s acclaimed novel. A badly burned pilot (Ralph Fiennes) recounts his life to his devoted nurse Hana (Juliette Binoche) amidst the devastation of post-war Italy. Joined soon by a group of soldiers – including the enigmatic Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) – the wounded patient’s remarkable recollections weave in and out of the drama of the present, slowly piecing together a portrait of his life. John Seale won the Academy Award for his masterful cinematography in this romantic epic, which was also awarded eight other Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche.
