About
Cristi Puiu’s darkly satirical The Death of Mr Lazarescu follows one man’s tumultuous night-long journey to seek a medical diagnosis for a mysterious and continually changing illness.
After borrowing some pain killers from a next-door neighbour that fail to have the desired effect, the ailing Domnui Lazarescu calls for an ambulance and proceeds to be shuttled around on a seemingly endless voyage between hospitals a by a well-meaning nurse. Each time Lazarescu is eventually seen by a medical professional, he receives a different diagnosis that requires him to move to another hospital to seek specialist treatment.
Winner of over 30 awards including the Uncertain Regard prize at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, The Death of Mr Lazarescu is a seminal film in the slow cinema genre that encourages its audiences (almost in real time) to bear witness to the plight of patients in a fictious healthcare system.
