About
Few films are as notoriously, yet joyfully, labyrinthine as Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep. Even the director's typically pared down style doesn't straighten out the endless trail of twists and turns found in this adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. The film stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall as, respectively, a private detective and the daughter of the retired general who has hired him. What initially appears to be a routine job quickly spins out of control as Bogart's Philip Marlowe goes deeper down a rabbit hole of corruption and murder. Bogie and Bacall ooze stylish cool in the lead roles, showing off the chemistry that made them one of the iconic duos of Hollywood.
