About
A masterly example of what philosopher Stanley Cavell described as the “comedy of remarriage”, Leo McCarey’s electric farce The Awful Truth finds married couple Jerry (Cary Grant) and Lucy (Irene Dunn) each suspecting the other of infidelity. After commencing divorce proceedings, they both find themselves incapable of allowing one another to move on and begin to realise their union may not be quite as over as first thought. Grant and Dunn are at their charming best as the warring couple, while McCarey’s astute comic direction would earn him an Academy Award for Best Director in this screwball par excellence.
The Awful Truth will screen from an imported 35mm preservation print, courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
