About
‘Bernadette, Felicia and Mitzi are three fabulous drag queen performers tired of the dangers posed by urban life in Sydney. When an offer comes up for a four-week cabaret engagement in Alice Springs, the three friends buy an old school bus, which they name “Priscilla.” And without haste or fear, they head for the adventure of their lifetime with the music of Shirley Bassey blasting from the stereo. Set against the vast Australian desert, where the beauty of the natural landscape rivals the trio’s elaborate ball gowns and wigs, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert follows Bernadette (Terence Stamp), Felicia (Guy Pearce) and Mitzi (Hugo Weaving of Proof) as they daringly confront homophobia, AIDS-phobia, misogyny and an overall fear of difference in the outback. They do so with style and class, performing and lip-synching all along the way. Even in the face of danger, they maintain the kind of queer spirit and sensibility that allows us to laugh in the face of prejudice even as we try to stamp it out. They also find friendship, even love, and each learns some personal lessons about survival—lessons that change their lives forever. And the people who come in contact with this phenomenal bunch learn that difference has appeal.’ Marc Smolowitz, San Francisco International Film Festival
