About
Arguably the most visually extravagant production of filmmaking fabulist Terry Gilliam's career, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is a fantastical voyage brimming with wonder and imagination. The film depicts the incredible stories of the 18th Century European nobleman, who railed against the Ottoman Empire with his merry band of misfit companions - including the mighty Albrecht, the sensationally speedy Berthold, the eagle-eyed Adolphus, and Gustavus, whose lungs command enough strength to floor soldiers with just breath alone.
Drawing from Gilliam's love of classic Czech animation, the film blends live action, animation and intricate miniatures to astounding effect. A commercial failure upon its release, the film is now often regarded as one of the great fantasy adventures of the 1980s, brought to life by an ensemble cast that includes John Neville, Eric Idle, Sarah Polley, Oliver Reed, and Robin Williams.
