About
Blurring the line between fact and fiction, That Cloud Never Left by director Yashaswini Raghunandan mixes fragments of aged 35mm film with documentary footage to create a touching portrait of life in Daspara, a West Bengal village situated just outside of Calcutta.
Made from discarded reels of old Bollywood films that have come from the wealthier hubs of Indian cities, members of the Daspara community create colourful handmade toys such as flutes, rattles and merry-go-rounds, that can be sold and enjoyed once again. Although the film draws attention to environmental and economic tensions that are prevalent across the growing economies of Asia, it also highlights the romance and nostalgia of cinema, by transforming its remnants into playful, magical objects.
