About
Sir is a modern day Cinderella tale of a gentle romance across India’s usually impenetrable class divide. Young urban professional Ashwin (Vivek Gomber) falls for his live in maid Ratna (Tillotama Shome). In her assured and subtle filmmaking debut, director Rohena Gera highlights an important and largely ignored issue of human rights violations of India’s domestic workforce. Gera wanted to use her camera to challenge the accepted low status of domestic workers by imbuing her protagonist Ratna as a heroine of her story and not a victim: “I’ve grappled with this class difference that exists in India all my life. ..as much as you might want to change things you can’t change them over night. I kept asking myself – what can we do?”
