About
If you are a filmmaker of course your surroundings, politics and whatnot make up the social milieu — that becomes relevant. From 1960 onwards I was becoming more aware of my surroundings and introducing more of such elements into my films.
Company Limited will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
Company Limited returns to a theme Satyajit Ray explores throughout his filmmaking career: the meaning that work imbues on individual lives and what impact moral choices and values have in modern society. Company Limited is a film concerned with contemporary urban life and was shot at a time in which Satyajit Ray's city of Kolkata was enduring daily bombings and shootings between the Communist Government and revolutionary Marxist-Maoist 'Naxalite' protestors.
The film centres on Shyamal (Barun Chanda), a manager at a fan manufacturing company, and his ambition to rise to company director. His wife's sister, Tutul (Sharmila Tagore), visits and Shyamal is keen to show her the urban sophistication his job affords them. Shyamal's reputation and possibly his job are threatened when a large work project runs late. Now he must decide how he will rectify the situation.
