About
Shadow of Angels was a film about a Germany where no one is starving and no one is scared anymore, and the only two people who are still sensitive are the prostitute and the Jew, because both of them are outcasts. – Daniel Schmid
Based on a Fassbinder play called Garbage, the City and Death that was banned multiple times for allegations of anti-Semitism, Shadow of Angels was directed by Fassbinder's colleague and former lover Daniel Schmid when Fassbinder was denied state funds to produce it. The centre of controversy is the character of a rich, nameless Jewish real estate broker (Klaus Löwitsch), who falls for a beautiful, unhappy prostitute named Lily (Ingrid Caven). Subject to the whims of her abusive pimp Raoul (Fassbinder), Lily walks the streets of Frankfurt to support his gambling with what little she is able to earn. When the wealthy real estate speculator discovers what an attentive listener Lily is, he begins paying her just to talk. Lily becomes rich and her suitor proposes marriage, but she finds herself rejected by her friends and just as lonely as before.
