About
Ex-con Kermek and his beloved Eva want to leave their crime-infested lives on the Kazakh steppes behind. “I’ve led a dog’s life” says Kermek, but now that he’s recently released from prison and has met the open-hearted Eva, this is the time to turn it all around. Kermek has a dream that will save them: they’ll open a cinema.
Filmmaker Adilkhan Yerzhanov crafts a stylish and absurdly humorous gangster film set in the eerie lawlessness of the Kazakh grasslands. Yellow Cat is a love letter to the film medium and is littered with smart, cinema-literate references ranging from nods to Singing in the Rain 1952 to Alain Delon’s suave gangster cool. Eva and Kermek encounter vivid characters of corrupt police and bumbling crooks as they attempt the formidable task of fleeing from their pursuers, the promise of knife-edge retribution ever at their heels.
