A gentle observational documentary, Meanwhile on Earth captures the moments when routine and ritual become one as a body transitions between death and burial.
In Sweden, the simple practicalities of interring a body after death is one of meticulous, systematic repetition. Taking us behind the professional curtain, Meanwhile on Earth captures the ordinariness of the working lives of funeral directors, hearse drivers, embalmers, musicians and others as they go about their day with pragmatism and kindness. Filmed across a range of locations, Olsson's existential documentary eschews manufactured sensationalism for a quiet approach to death, one which invites contemplation of the bigger questions of life, death and what we leave behind.
