About
Carol White (Julianne Moore), a homemaker and self-described ‘milkaholic’, lives in Los Angeles’ suburban sprawl. After she begins to exhibit severe unexplained allergies to seemingly the entire world around her, she seeks refuge at the Wrenwood Centre, an isolated new-age desert community for people suffering from environmental illnesses, only to discover new forms of existential suffocation.
Featuring a harrowing lead performance by Julianne Moore, Todd Haynes's Clinton-era parable of suburban ennui is a searing indictment of 90s hyper-materialism and the toxicity of urban overdevelopment. The film marked the founding of Haynes’ and Moore’s dynamic creative partnership, which was to continue in the Douglas Sirk-inspired Far from Heaven 2002.
