About
Rouge is the captivating story of a courtesan Fleur who falls in love with Chan — an aspiring actor and heir to his family's fortune — in the 1930s. Facing pressure for their forbidden love, they make a suicide pact and agree to meet in the afterlife. Decades later, Fleur's ghost returns to a starkly changed Hong Kong to find out why Chan never arrived to join her.
Stanley Kwan's Rouge features two beloved stars of Hong Kong cinema in Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, whose tragic early deaths in 2003 would add further pathos to this melancholy tale. The supernatural romance at the core of the story is wrapped around an incisive portrait of Hong Kong's rapid modernisation throughout the twentieth century, with the sumptuous costuming and production design of the 1930s sections contrasted against the colder urbanity of the contemporary era. Newly restored in 4K, Kwan's film remains one of the iconic masterpieces of Hong Kong cinema.
